Stylish Dressing with the New Wide Calf Riding Boot
For years women have had a variety of boot styles to choose from for fall and winter footwear. However, often women with larger legs, especially those with even slightly larger than average calves had to stay with the shorter boots since the standard boot top was too tight for a comfortable fit. Now, many boot makers are providing a wide calf riding boot that is a complement to any leg shape and size.
A wide calf riding boot can come in any variety of styles and colors. Some are very traditional English designed riding boots while others have a more western flair. Some are even made of Heavy Duty cloth, canvas or man made materials while others are very rich, natural leathers. Some riding boots are completely smooth and elegant while others have a more Oxford type of styling. Buckles and ankle straps for accent are common on some styles while lace up or zip-up fastenings are possible in many different brands. Some really traditional and very classic styles of riding boots feature the lace up area at the front of the ankle, more correctly known as Field Boots, are also a terrific and very sporty looking addition to your wardrobe.
The other major features of riding boots will include the heel size and the toe shape. A traditional riding boot has a low heel, usually less than one inch, and the toe tends to be slightly tapered from mid foot to a very slightly rounded toe. Other styles may include more of a squared off toe or a completely rounded toe with all combinations in between. What you won’t find is an extremely sharp or pointed toe on these riding boots, which means they are great for individuals with all widths of feet from narrow on up to wide. There are also some boots, most commonly the Oxford styles, that may include a two tone or dual color toe and heel piece that provides a nice contrast to the rest of the boot. While not completely traditional, these can be a very comfortable boot for both dress and casual wear and will match with a wide variety of colors and styles of skirts, jeans, slacks and leggings.
A true wide calf riding boot will typically cover the leg to just below the knee. Depending on the specific brand and style this is usually between 12 and 14 inches, however, boot heights will vary by manufacturer. The top of the boot may be squared off or it may taper to the back, providing a true riding boot look with skirts or with leggings. Since leggings are really in this fall, adding riding boots in black or dark brown can prove to be a very versatile fashion accessory in your wardrobe. Top this with a longer duster style jacket, a longer riding jacket or even an oversized men’s style button down shirt and your leggings and you look ready to ride out to any type of event or activity.
The secret to a good fit in a wide calf riding boot is a stretch type inset or panel, typically on the inside of the boot. This panel is often elastic or the entire top of the boot is of a stretch type of material that hugs the legs comfortably and gives you that riding boot look that is sleek and stylish. With all the different styles, materials and colors of boots it is a great idea to get several pair, they are always in style and a perfect way to add a sporty look to any type of casual or dress outfit.
